Mabé cultured pearls are a unique gift of nature. Formed on the inside of the shell, rather than inside the body of the oyster, these pearls have a beauty and grace all their own. In the culturing process, a shaped bit of oyster mantel tissue is placed on the inside lip of the host shell. The oyster gradually coats this foreign tissue, slowly forming a "blister" of lustrous nacre. Once removed, the blister is usually backed with mother-of-pearl before setting. This type of pearl culturing was one of the earliest forms of the art: in the 16th century, Chinese artists created miniature mother-of-pearl Buddhas by placing exquisitely carved figures inside the shell of living oysters.
